5/31/2023 0 Comments Sniper elite v2 review![]() ![]() Having learned where the troops would run for cover, I caught a clue – or so I thought – and planted some grenade trip-wires in those locations. I failed the mission once before with a poorly-tossed grenade that vaporized my character. The remaining troops behind it would bail from their transport and attempt to locate and eviscerate me with the infamous MP-40 submachine guns. When the armored car in front of my target convoy passed the second charge, I was supposed to shoot the satchel and take it out. ![]() In one mission I had to pick up some high-explosive filled satchels and place them at two choke points. I had the most fun in SEV2 when I was given a little bit of wiggle room to create and execute my own plan. This new feature coupled with the inclusion of two-player cooperative mode, customizable difficulty levels and unlockable weapons will definitely add some serious replayability to the game. I’d say it’s easily twice as difficult as the campaign. And challenge mode definitely lives up to its name. Then I noticed SEV2’s new, “Challenge Mode” where your character attempts to survive endless waves of belligerent Bolsheviks and vindictive Nazis. SEV2 attempts to alleviate this issue with the inclusion of collectables such as Nazi gold bars and bottles of french wine. So long as other people play, so too will I. But in a 1st or 3rd person shooter video game that isn’t terribly popular, the replayability of the title is limited by the longevity (or lack thereof) of its community. This isn’t to say that the original Sniper Elite wasn’t enjoyable – on the contrary it was excellent and offered unparalleled ballistic realism for its time. I had enjoyed its predecessor, but only after waiting for it to hit the bargain bin. In these moments the game devolves into a pop-up shooting gallery, punctuated only by the kill-cam animations every other shot.I fired up Sniper Elite V2 with a little trepidation. The worst involve tight corridors, or narrow paths through winding streets, where the uncanny vision of enemy soldiers allows them to discover you before you're ready. The best are large open courtyards where distant falling bombs mask the sound of your rifle fire, allowing you to move and shoot unseen and unheard. There's no consistency to the levels the distance between each checkpoint feels like a standalone vignette in a series of unconnected sequences. ![]() Or at least, it does when it gives you room to manoeuvre. That doesn't diminish the pleasure of conceiving and executing a plan: put the effort in and SEV2 rewards you with the feeling of carefully thought-out mischief falling into place. The easiest option in any given situation is simply to camp behind cover and shoot anyone who comes into range, using the third-person perspective to check you aren't being flanked and the regenerating health to stay alive. Snipers, it seems, are the griefers of war. And if someone does spot you, just change position – a ghostly white image will show your last seen point – creating confusion and panic as the enemy fires impotently at nothing. Your target's screams of pain will attract more soldiers to run in front of your crosshair. 30 calibre chaos, it's possible to take someone down with a non-fatal incapacitating shot. ![]()
